Character: Yayoi Shioiri
Age: 13-14
Canon: Loveless
Canon Point: CHAPTER 118, right after wheezing and running off.
Background:
Seriously, though, he doesn’t have much actual background since they don’t really delve into his past much in the series. It seems that he’s always been weak, but studious. He’s just kind of there sometimes, hanging out with Yuiko and Ritsuka in a normal, friendly way. He’s not really super important to the story, save for showcasing that there is also a ‘normal’ side to the world.
Personality:
At a first glance Yayoi might seem like a rather unassuming character, a little socially awkward and distant in terms of the people around him. It appears that he has more acquaintances than he actually does friends, so it’s safe to say that he’s never really cared all that much (or had the time) to form deep bonds with many of his classmates. He appears rather serious at times, even a little too serious or blunt to the point that he blurts things out without really filtering anything at all. If he doesn’t like something that you’re doing, he’s likely to call you out on it or even get a little sassy sometimes.
He appears to have a very weak constitution and asthma, both of which cause him to miss classes for short periods of time. It’s very clearly indicated that he hates this part of himself, a side that comes up when he first meets Ritsuka. He sees him as his ‘opposite’, assuming that the other boy is athletic and healthy; something that Yayoi could only dream of being.
He’s no stranger to dwelling or brooding over things, sometimes his feelings overwhelming him so much that it has an impact on him physically as well (such as triggering an asthma attack or causing him to get sick again). He does also have something of a jealous streak regarding Ritsuka, but that seems to have cooled the more he spends time with him.
In addition to this, he has also been shown to be easily flustered and prone to overreactions. He yells, calls people out on their crap and basically becomes overly passionate if he really gets worked up over something. He’s shown to be very dedicated and fiercely loyal to his friends, especially when it comes to Yuiko. He’s had a crush on her for a very long time and when it comes to her, he can be rather single-minded; often showing up out of nowhere to leap to her defense or to wedge himself in the middle of an interaction with another guy (at least in the beginning, as in the case with Ritsuka). As the series has progressed, he seems to just enjoy spending time with his friends, going with the flow even if it’s something that pushes the limits of his physical capabilities.
He’s aware that he can’t do very much, expressing that he might like to be a writer someday since he can’t do much in the way of physical work. He’s shown to be a good student, despite the time that he has to miss due to health conditions. He began learning English in kindergarten and seems to really enjoy studying since it’s something that he feels is ‘safe’. He also majors in being a huge dork, being a member of the band club and is knowledgeable when it comes to video games (evidenced by the fact that he helps Ritsuka work out the code for his ‘meeting’ in Wisdom Resurrection).
He has no knowledge of the other parts of the story, so in terms of being a teenage boy he’s pretty normal. Go to school, figure out your life, ask out girls, get rejected, pine over girls FOREVER, get jealous of all her guy friends; you know, typical teenage boy stuff.
He seems to really just be the type of kid trying to figure out where he fits into everything, even if he feels like he has to push himself just a little; it can never be said that he doesn’t have determination, after all, he hasn’t given up on Yuiko yet!
Abilities:
Being a big nerd, randomly appearing out of nowhere to defend Yuiko and not playing the accordion.
Seriously, though, he doesn’t really have any special abilities aside from his intellect.
Oh wait, he’s a cat person! IDK if that really counts??
First Person Sample:
voice;
[ First a cough, then something of a wheeze. Finally, the voice comes through and sounds very small at first, almost hollow as if the boy is struggling to catch his breath. ]
Ah, excuse me I…
[ Another cough, the clearing of his throat before he steadies his voice. ]
…I think I’m lost, maybe? I think…
[ Wait, wait, wait, this didn’t look familiar at all, did it? There’s an obvious hitch in his breathing again, a momentary pause as he finally looks around and speaks again. It’s clear from his tone that he may or may not be panicking just a little. ]
No, no, no, no! I am definitely lost…this looks like….
[ God, had he passed out? Because honestly, this looked like something out of one of his games. He pursed his lips a little, brow furrowing with resolve even though it wasn’t something that could be seen. ]
My name is Shioiri Yayoi and I was in the park playing with my friends before I ended up here. I…I don’t know if anyone can hear me or not or even if I’m dreaming, but I need some help.
[ A sigh, as he ponders over what he’s even doing or if anyone can hear him. It’s almost audible the way the he slumps over. ]
Please?
Third Person Sample:
He’d moved beyond the initial panic of not being where he was supposed to be, but somehow that had led him down a mental road that he hadn’t quite expected. He was dwelling to a ridiculous degree and had already had to use his inhaler once; now he was just sitting dismally on the steps of a nearby building and staring at it. Nevermind the looks that he was getting from passersby, he was asking himself the hard questions.
“What good is an inhaler when you’re dead?”
Yes, that was the conclusion he’d come to, that he was dead. He’d died on his way out of the park because he was weak, he couldn’t breathe and—
He stopped there, sure that something had moved out of the corner of his eye, glancing up toward the frame around the steps and seeing nothing. It seemed crazy, though, but he couldn’t help but feel that it seemed a little…smaller? He shook his head; that thought managing to pull a faint laugh from him. That was definitely crazy, wasn’t it? He couldn’t help that next laugh that bubbled up in his throat, looking down at the inhaler in his hand again. If he were really dead, like really dead, he wouldn’t need it, right? Of course not!
“I…I’m alive!” He declared rather suddenly, perhaps even a little more loudly than he meant. His now racing thoughts, however, were interrupted when he heard another voice.
“Excuse me, you’re sitting on my steps.” It didn’t register immediately, that hint of irritation in the voice, though the boy did make it to his feet rather suddenly; inhaler still tight in his grip.
“I’m alive! Isn’t it great?” He exclaimed, pocketing that much coveted item as he looked up at the stranger. It was only then that he noticed the look on their face.
“That’s nice, but you’re still on my steps.”
“Ah, right…s-sorry!” He stepped to the side, offering a nod of apology before stepping away from the building. He watched as the stranger moved on in through the door, unable to keep from looking at the doorframe again with curiosity. It was still smaller, wasn’t it? He frowned to himself, shaking his head again and letting out a soft sigh.
“It’s definitely not smaller, it can’t be. “ He mumbled to himself, turning his back on the doorway and setting off to explore. Only live people could do that, right? Or at least he hoped as much.
